Richard Stanhope

Richard Courtney Stanhope (born April 27, 1957 in Blackpool ) is a former British rower . He participated in four Olympic Games and won a silver medal with the eighth in 1980 .

Career

The 1.89 m tall Richard Stanhope was the batsman of the British eight at the 1980 Olympic Games in Moscow , the cast Duncan McDougall , Allan Whitwell , Henry Clay , Chris Mahoney , Andrew Justice , John Pritchard , Malcolm McGowan , Richard Stanhope and helmsman Colin Moynihan took over. The eighth finished behind the eighth from the USSR in the run-up and second behind the Australians in the hope run. In the final, the big boat from the GDR won ahead of the British and the rowers from the USSR.

In 1981 at the World Championships in Munich , Mark Andrews , Chris Mahoney, Colin Seymour , John Bland , Andrew Justice, John Pritchard, Malcolm McGowan, Richard Stanhope and Colin Moynihan formed the British eighth. The boat from the USSR won over the British and the boat from the United States. In the following year, the British eighth finished eighth and last at the World Championships in Lucerne . At the 1983 World Championships in Duisburg , Stanhope rowed the four without a helmsman to tenth place. The following year, John Beattie and Richard Stanhope started in twos without a helmsman at the Olympic Games in Los Angeles . After a third place in the preliminaries, the British took last place in the semi-finals and in the B-final and thus ranked 12th in the overall standings.

At the 1985 World Championships in Hazewinkel , Stanhope came ninth with a double scull . He then returned to the British eighth, who finished twelfth at the 1986 World Championships and ninth at the 1987 World Championships . At the 1988 Olympic Games in Seoul , the British eighth rowed Richard Stanhope, Anton Obholzer , Peter Beaumont , Gavin Stewart , Terence Dillon , Salih Hassan , Stephen Turner , Nicholas Burfitt and helmsman Simon Jefferies . The British took third place behind the boat from the USSR and the Canadians in the run-up, but won their hope run. In the final, the Germany eight won ahead of the boat from the USSR and the boat from the United States. Three seconds behind the US boat, the British took fourth place.

After a two-year break, Stanhope started again in the British national team in 1991. At the 1991 World Championships in Vienna , the British eighth rowed with Gregory Searle , Richard Stanhope, Jonny Singfield , Anton Obholzer, Jonathan Searle , Tim Foster , Richard Phelps , Martin Cross and helmsman Garry Herbert . The British won the bronze medal behind the Germans and Canadians. At the 1992 Olympic Games in Barcelona , the British four-man star without a helmsman in the line-up of Salih Hassan, John Garrett , Gavin Stewart and Richard Stanhope. The British finished fourth in the preliminaries, won the repechage, finished fourth in the semifinals and won the B final. They were seventh in the overall ranking.
