Allan Whitwell

Allan Whitwell (born May 5, 1954 in York ) is a former British rower .

Career

The 1.85 m tall Allan Whitwell competed at the 1976 Olympic Games in Montreal with Thomas Bishop , Mark Hayter and Andrew Justice in the double fours and finished ninth.

At the World Championships in Amsterdam in 1977 , he joined the British eight and reached fifth place. In 1978 at the World Championships in New Zealand , he finished tenth with the double foursome.

Two years later at the 1980 Moscow Olympics , the British eighth consisted of Duncan McDougall , Allan Whitwell, Henry Clay , Chris Mahoney , Andrew Justice, John Pritchard , Malcolm McGowan , Richard Stanhope and helmsman Colin Moynihan . The British won the silver medal behind the boat from the GDR and in front of the boat from the USSR.

In 1982 at the World Championships in Lucerne Whitwell rowed to sixth place in a double scull. Two years later, Whitwell finished eighth in fifth place at the 1984 Olympic Games in Los Angeles.

Allan Whitwell then switched to lightweight rowing. Together with Carl Smith , he won the 1986 World Championships in Nottingham in the lightweight double scull before the French and Canadians. The following year at the World Championships in Copenhagen Smith and Whitwell won the bronze medal behind the Italians and the French.
