Markus Greed

Markus Gier (born January 1, 1970 in St. Gallen ) is a former Swiss rower who became Olympic and world champion together with his brother Michael in the 1990s.

At the 1989 World Rowing Championships, Markus Gier won silver in the lightweight class with the Swiss double scull . In 1992 he won bronze in a double scull with his brother . In 1993, the two received silver behind the Australians Gary Lynagh and Bruce Hick . After bronze in 1994, the Gier brothers succeeded in winning the world championship title in Tampere in 1995. Markus and Michael Gier achieved their greatest success at the 1996 Olympic Games in Atlanta. They won three seconds ahead of the boat from the Netherlands and the Australians. In 1998 the two won bronze again at the world championships. At the 2000 Olympic Games in Sydney, the brothers came in fifth.

Markus Gier started for the Seeclub Rorschach. He is an electrician by trade.
