Lists on the subject

The 8 × 68 mm S is a German magnum hunting cartridge. It was developed in the 1930s due to the steadily increasing demand for a magnum cartridge in 8 mm caliber.

history

The cartridge was presented by the Rheinisch-Westfälische Sprengstoffgesellschaft (RWS) in 1939. It was intended for use in repeater with the widespread Mauser system . The original ammunition of this system, the 7.92 × 57 mm Mauser , had a similar bullet caliber , but a larger case volume was required for a higher bullet energy. However, the casing of the Mauser cartridge could not be extended at will, as this would have exceeded the dimensions of the loading device. Instead, a completely new case with a wide butt base was created, with which the 98 systems could be used without major changes. The very rapid ammunition proved to be very suitable for hunting domestic red or African big game.
