Lists on the subject

.300 Winchester Short Magnum ( .300 WSM ) is a magnum cartridge introduced by Winchester in 2001 .

The .300 WSM, like its sisters, the .270 WSM and the 7mm WSM, is a cartridge whose case was designed on the drawing board. It does without the typical belt of the American magnum cartridges, which are still based on the basic case of the English .375 Holland & Holland. The WSM series follows the idea of modern cartridge creations, which are characterized by short, voluminous cases with a slight taper and a steep shoulder. The cartridges of the WSM series can be used in short systems, which enables a shorter overall length of the weapon. Due to the larger diameter of the case, however, fewer cartridges fit into the magazine. The thick sleeve and the steep shoulder are also disadvantageous for the supply from the magazine. The burn-off behavior of the powder is better than that of the longer .300 Winchester Magnum due to the more compact sleeve geometry, which is the prerequisite for optimal precision. The high maximum gas pressure of 4,400 bar enables an optimal energy yield from the propellant powder used.

The cartridge is intended as an alternative or successor to the older .300 Winchester Magnum , a typical belt cartridge with a long case.
