Star Trek: Hidden Frontier is a Star Trek fan film series based on the events of the ninth Star Trek movie Star Trek: The Insurrection . With 50 episodes in seven years, it's one of the longest running internet projects.
All scenes that were not played in real locations were filmed using green screen technology and combined with still images from the series or self-created backgrounds. The space scenes were created by self-produced computer-generated imagery effects (CGI).
Although not part of the official franchise , the series was featured on the official Star Trek homepage several times . Various press articles also helped to increase the awareness of the series.
The episodes produced up to 2008 were subsequently offered for download with optional German subtitles.
So far, seasons 2 to 6 have been digitally remastered step by step.
action
The location of the plot is mainly the space station Deep Space 12 located in Briar's Patch and the spaceship USS Excelsior deployed there . In addition to a story arc that survives all episodes about the threat to the Federation from the hitherto unknown Gray , the series also deals with the complex relationships between the characters. For the first time in the, albeit unofficial, Star Trek history , homosexual relationships are discussed. Although the majority of the characters are newly introduced to the plot, the series also develops established characters.

Offshoot
In 2007, after the end of the seventh season, the producers turned to several offshoots . In autumn 2007, the first episode of the Star Trek: Odyssey series was published, the second Star Trek: The Helena Chronicles followed in January 2008. After the great response to the short episode The Orphans of War, which was co-created with the Scottish Star Trek: Intrepid project (2007) the miniseries Star Trek: Operation Beta Shield was released. A second mini-series entitled "Star Trek: Federation One" started as a film but continued as an audio series. In 2011 it was announced that the production of Star Trek video productions will be discontinued.
