The 7.5 × 54 mm cartridge was the standard rifle ammunition of the French armed forces for several decades . It was created after the First World War and was intended as a long overdue replacement for the outdated 8 mm Lebel rim cartridge .

development

Cartridge 7.5 × 54 mm

The original Modèle 1924 design had a rimless sleeve 58 mm in length. However, this version did not work. The ammunition could not be reliably fed into machine guns, and there was also the fact that it looked very similar to the German 7.92 × 57 mm Mauser cartridge . That ammunition was still in abundance in booty stocks, which led to serious mix-ups: the wrong ammunition could burst barrels. With the shortened version Modèle 1929 with a larger case base diameter, both problems could be solved. France held on to the cartridge until the 1980s, when NATO calibres were only introduced there.
