Lists on the subject |
The Hotchkiss M1909 was a French machine gun developed in the early 20th century, produced by Hotchkiss et Cie and known as the Hotchkiss Mark I , Hotchkiss Portative or M1909 Benet-Mercie and Benét-Mercié Machine Rifle .
description
The weapon was designed as a light machine gun with only 25 individual parts. Compared to the original Hotchkiss design, it varied in the breech and the ammunition feed (from above).
The Hotchkiss M1909 was an air-cooled gas pressure charger with a screw lock . The lock consists of a " lock nut " ( French écrou de fermeture ) with an interrupted thread, which is slipped over the barrel as the bolt carrier moves forward and turned to the left by a control piece , whereby the thread segments engage in their counterparts on the barrel and thereby lock . It had a maximum firing range of 3800 m and weighed 12 kg. The first models were loaded with metal strips with a capacity of 30 rounds , later models with ammunition belts . The US models had a bipod , while other models use a light tripod mount. The tripod was attached to the weapon, could be moved with it and was thus completely different from all other tripods of that time.
variants
France
- Hotchkiss M1909 (Hotchkiss Mle 1909, Benet-Mercie M1909). Caliber 8 mm Lebel , introduced in 1908.
Great Britain
- Hotchkiss Mark I. Caliber .303 British , Cavalry , made by Enfield
United States
- US Automatic Machine Rifle, Caliber .30, Model of 1909. Caliber .30-06 Springfield . The rate of fire was 650 rounds / min. About 670 weapons were manufactured by the Springfield Armory and Colt's Patent Firearms Company . Because of the extremely difficult to use sheet metal loading strip , especially at night , the weapon was nicknamed the Daylight Gun .
commitment
With the retirement of the hand-operated Gatling machine guns from US stocks, it was introduced in the USA. The US troops used four Benet Mercie during the Pancho Villa expedition in Mexico 1916–1917 (around 20,000 rounds were fired) and at the beginning of the American war participation in France in 1917.
France and Great Britain used the Hotchkiss M1909 during World War I and World War II .
