Adolf Freiherr Odkolek von Újezd (or, Germanized, Adolf Freiherr Odkolek von Augezd ) (born December 1, 1854 in Prague ; † January 1, 1917 in Stockerau ) was a Bohemian-Austrian weapons technician and kuk officer.

Life

Adolf Odkolek von Újezd joined the Uhlan Regiment 6 as a one-year volunteer in 1873 and became an active cadet in 1874. In 1880 he was promoted to first lieutenant, from 1882 was almost permanently on leave against parental leave of fees or with waiting fee, retired in 1896 as Rittmeister 2nd class with the 11th Uhlan Regiment.

Before he even entered the pension, he invented the gas pressure loader , a rifle, a cannon or a pistol, which was loaded with the gas pressure of a shot. A part of the expanding propellant gas is diverted during the shot through a hole in the barrel in order to reload a new cartridge and cock the breech. Odkolek von Újezd's inventions were used in the construction of machine guns , machine guns and machine cannons , among other things : All machine guns operated by gas pressure with drilled barrels and gas pistons ultimately go back to Odkolek's invention. In addition, in his design drawings for the patent specification, the barrel of the rapid-fire gun was already shown with ribs for air cooling, a development that would eventually replace all water-cooled systems.

Odkolek von Újezd also made great contributions to the perfection of flight technology, namely that of the parachute. In this regard, he was active on the Flugfelde in Aspern and also in Baden , where before the outbreak of war he made an experiment with a doll and a parachute on the Rauhenstein ruins .

At the beginning of the war in 1914, Odkolek was reactivated as an instructor in the cavalry reserve officer school in Holitsch (Moravia), looking for a frontline deployment himself , and around 1915/1916 with the Technical Military Committee to test the one he had constructed - and subsequently as a identified as unfit for use in war - to cooperate with mine throwers; In 1916, if he continued to work as an instructor, he was appointed major in the reserve.

On January 5, 1917 Adolf Freiherr Odkolek von Újezd was buried in the presence of his sisters Frieda Heinrich Edle von O'Morovicza, Ottilie and Felizie Freiinnen Odkolek von Augezd and Bohumilla Czapeck in the family vault of the St. Helena cemetery, Baden near Vienna .
