The castle ruin Rauhenstein is the ruin of a hilltop castle in the Helenental north-east of the Schwechat , in the local area of Baden near Vienna . Like the neighboring Rauheneck castle ruins , it was probably built in the 12th century by the Tursen family of knights. It was inhabited again and again by robber barons and often destroyed and rebuilt.
However, the roof tax from the 18th century is to blame for its final decline . At that time, many castles were closed because this form of building tax was calculated based on the roof area of buildings. Maintenance work on the ruins, which was positively received in terms of the spa business, took place in 1881.
The keep is the oldest part of the castle and dates back to the 12th century. The walls of the 20 m high tower are three meters thick at the base.
Since 1993, the so-called "Ruin Festival" has been celebrated on the Rauhenstein ruins from April 30th to May 1st ( Walpurgis Night ).
A group of boy and girl scouts of the Baden group in the Guides and Scouts age group is named after the castle. The castle is currently closed until further notice because structural security measures have to be implemented. Villa Rauhenstein is located at the foot of the ruin .
