from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Újezd is one of the most common place names in the Czech Republic. The place name Újezd (German: Ujest , Aujest or Augezd ) exists 117 times in Bohemia and around 30 times in Moravia . Until 1924 the spelling Oujezd was mostly used. Other forms of name such as Ujazd , Uhyst , can be found in Poland and Lusatia .

Emergence

The name comes from the time of the Slavic land expansion and was given in the 12th to 14th centuries . Similar to the common name Lhota, the names arise from legal titles which the founders and residents received from the sovereign. So does Újezd one by rode round (lat. Circuitus or ambitus ) delimited and been put into possession of land, which the German terms Bifang or meringue equivalent. Lhota, on the other hand, describes the period during which the acquired land is a free good.

While this meaning applies to most of the places called Újezd, the Czech word újezd is ambiguous. In addition to a small district or Sprengel, it also stands for a ravine . This explanation applies, for example, to the former location of Újezd on the edge of Prague's Malá Strana ( Lesser Town ) or Újezd pod Přimdou, which is located on an old trade route .
