The .50-90 cartridge was launched in 1872 by the US company Sharps as ammunition for bison hunting. It is loaded with black powder and, depending on the weight of the bullet and the resulting powder weight in grain , it was also known as .50-100 Sharps and .50-110 Sharps.

The fabulous shot by Billy Dixon on June 27, 1874 during the second battle for Adobe Walls is attributed to this caliber . Dixon shot here with a lucky hit, as he later claimed himself, an Indian at a distance of 1538 yards (approx. 1405 m) from the horse and ended the battle with the subsequent retreat of the Indians.
