The .17 Hornady Magnum Rimfire ( .17 HMR ) is a small caliber cartridge with rimfire ignition that is commonly used for hunting predatory game and prey .

The cartridge was developed from the .22 WMR . For this purpose, the case neck of the .22 WMR was retracted to 4.8 mm and a smaller hunting bullet with a diameter of ~ 4.4 mm (0.172 in ) was inserted into it.

The projectiles usually have a weight between 17 and 20 grains and have a short projectile tip made of plastic.
