The .308 Norma Magnum (7.62 × 65 mm BR) is a hunting cartridge developed in Sweden .
The cartridge was developed by Nils Kvale, at Norma Precision . Like the larger .358 Norma Magnum , it is based on the .300 H&H Magnum . Experience in developing the 8 mm chamfer was used as a basis. There, the cartridge case of the .300 H&H Magnum was used and the neck of the case was reduced so that the 7.92 mm bullet fit. The sleeve diameter tapers only slightly from 13.03 to 12.45 mm up to the sleeve shoulder.
With the introduction of the .308 Norma Mag it seemed that the new cartridge would have a bright future, but it was soon replaced in popularity by the .300 Winchester Magnum . The first and one of the few manufacturers who offered rifles in the .308 Norma Magnum caliber was Schultz & Larsen from Denmark with the M-65DL. The reason for this was probably the very high cost of the ammunition.
Related cartridges are the .308 Winchester (7.62 × 51 mm), the .300 Winchester Magnum (7.62 × 66.5 mm), the .338 Winchester Magnum (8.5 × 63.5 mm) and the . 30-06 Springfield (7.62 × 63 mm).
