Various mechanical gauges

Gauge or Gage (pronunciation for both spellings: [ geidʒ ]) is an English word for different German terms. On the one hand, it denotes the physical quantity to be measured , i.e. a measure , specifically a standard or gauge block , and on the other hand the associated measuring device , in particular a measuring gauge , dial gauge or a caliper , for the metrological determination of this quantity.

Unit of measurement

Gauge for determining the diameter of wire

The unit of measurement gauge or gage (abbreviation: G or gg ) is used for the following items:

• Size of needles for syringes
• the thickness of wires, screws and thin sheet metal, especially in North America
  • American Wire Gauge (AWG), in use in North America for non-ferrous metal wire since 1857.
  • US Steel Wire Gauge (US. Standard Plate Gauge or Washburn & Moen Gauge), for steel wire in North America.
  • Imperial Standard Wire Gauge (SWG or ISWG) was the official unit of measurement for wire diameter in Great Britain from 1884 to 1986 . Before that there was
  • Birmingham Wire Gauge (BWG), it is identical to Stubs' Iron Wire Gauge .
• the string gauge for guitars , basses (Music Wire Gauge) and tennis strings .
• the caliber of shotguns
• the gauge of railway sidings
• as a diameter specification for piercings
• For the thread of spokes or nipples on bicycle wheels
• the number of needles to 1.5 engl. Inches (= 38.1 mm) for hosiery
