Lists on the subject

The .277 Wolverine (also .277 WLV) cartridge is a medium caliber developed in 2014 by the American company Mad Dog Weapon Systems,  Inc. mainly for hunting with semi-automatic or fully automatic AR-15 weapons. There is currently no standardization according to  SAAMI  (aimed at) or  CIP .

development

The aim of the development was to obtain a more powerful cartridge in comparison to the standard 5.56 × 45 mm NATO , which can be used in an AR-15 system with as little structural and financial effort as possible. The widespread cartridge case of the 5.56 × 45 mm NATO (.223 Remington) was used as the basis and combined with the bullet of the 6.8 mm Remington SPC . For this purpose, the case was shortened to 39 mm and the case neck was designed in such a way that the STANAG -4172- magazines can still be used, as can the firing pin . All that is needed to adapt to the larger caliber is a new barrel , which is a big advantage over comparable calibers such as the 6.8 mm Remington SPC or 6.5 mm Grendel .

A similar approach was taken with the .300 AAC Blackout (7.62 × 35 mm) caliber , but the .277 Wolverine stayed with a smaller bullet in favor of greater speed .

ballistics

The .277 Wolverine is available in various loads with bullet weights from 75 gr (4.86 g ) to 130 gr (8.42 g), but there are also special subsonic bullets up to 200 gr (12.96 g) for use with silencer . Although the slimmer cartridge case can hold around 30% less propellant charge than that of the 6.8 mm Remington SPC due to its smaller volume , the ballistic performance is quite comparable. Both calibers achieve similar projectile speeds and energy outputs , with only slight advantages in favor of the 6.8 mm Rem. SPC .
