Lists on the subject

The cartridge in caliber .577 Tyrannosaur (also .577 T-Rex ) is a rifle cartridge for hunting big game.

Characteristics

The cartridge was developed in 1993 by Arthur B. Alphin, the former owner of A-Square Company, LLC in Chamberlain , South Dakota , at the special request of some professional African big game hunters and has since been mass-produced by A-Square. It is characterized by the highest muzzle energy (up to 13,660 joules ) that is still achieved today with hunting cartridges. Because of the extremely high energy that results from the projectile weight and the muzzle velocity , monolithic solid projectiles must be used to prevent the projectile from ripping or disintegrating when fired. Therefore, the jacketed bullets developed for .577 Nitro Express caliber are unsuitable for reloading the cartridge.

The .577 Tyrannosaur cartridge was therefore named after the large, carnivorous dinosaur Tyrannosaurus rex , and of course also for marketing reasons .

controversy

Due to the very strong recoil , the cartridge is controversial and judged by opponents as largely unsuitable for normal hunting situations. Proponents appreciate the high energy in emergency situations (e.g. when attacking large game such as water buffalo , elephants and rhinos ), but also because of the flight path stability over long distances, which is not affected by smaller obstacles (e.g. branches of bushes and trees) .

Use of weapons

The manufacturing company A-Square Company, LLC has designed their bolt action rifle "Hannibal" for use with the .577 Tyrannosaur cartridge. Furthermore, the company "Smithson-Gunmaker" in Provo, Utah manufactures individually manufactured weapons based on systems from the company "Granite Mountain Arms" (GMA), Phoenix, Arizona , for this caliber. Further custom-made products are available from individual gunsmiths, despite the high loads placed on the system by the .577 Tyrannosaur cartridge.
