Maximilian Leopold Engelbert von Biegeleben , since 1893 Freiherr von Biegeleben (born January 23, 1813 in Darmstadt , † April 17, 1899 there ) was a Hessian and German politician.

Life

origin

Biegeleben came from an originally Arnsberg civil servant family. He was the son of Kaspar Josef von Biegeleben (1766–1842), who was initially a high-ranking official of Kurköln and later of the Grand Duchy of Hesse. His mother Marianne, née von Braumann (1783–1843) came from a patrician family in Aachen . His brother was the Hessian diplomat Arnold von Biegeleben , another brother was the influential Austrian diplomat Ludwig von Biegeleben .

Career

During his studies in 1829 he became a member of the Fäßlianer Heidelberg fraternity and the old fraternity Germania Gießen .

Like his brother, he was strictly pro-Austrian. Biegeleben was the representative of the Grand Duchy of Hesse at the customs union negotiations in 1852. Biegeleben was president (finance minister) of the finance ministry of the Grand Duchy of Hesse from 1871 to 1873. Between 1874 and 1878 he was a member of the Reichstag for the constituency Aachen 3 (City of Aachen) . He belonged to the Center Party . In the Reichstag he was a member of the budget commission. In 1877 he was also a member of a commission regulating patent law.

On January 23, 1893, Grand Duke Ernst Ludwig raised him to the status of hereditary baron . Biegeleben was also Commander First Class of the Order of Ludwig and holder of the Crown for the Grand Cross of the Order of Merit of Philip the Magnanimous .

family

He had married Emma Elisabeth von Biegeleben (1817-1893) on August 20, 1839 in Breslau . The following children were born from the marriage:

  • Ludwig Maximilian (1849–1921), Prussian major general
  • Maximilian (1859–1945), Grand Ducal Hessian Real Privy Councilor and Envoy
