Karl Wilhelm Kopp , von Kopp from 1803 , (* December 24, 1770 in Marburg ; † March 6, 1844 in Darmstadt ), was Finance Minister of the Grand Duchy of Hesse .

Karl Wilhelm Kopp was the son of the Director of the Higher Appeal Court in Kassel Dr. jur. Carl Philipp Kopp (1728–1777) and his wife Amalie née Stirn (1735–1813). His first marriage was Viktoria Amalie, nee von Siegel (1783-1818) from Homburg vdH , the daughter of Hz. Braunschweig. Judge von Siegel and Auguste von Bodé. His second marriage was on August 16, 1819 in Darmstadt, Auguste Friederike Caroline née von Bodé (1801-1858), the daughter of the Oberfinanzkammerdirektor Wilhelm von Bodé .

His brother Ulrich Friedrich Kopp was a well-known German legal scholar and palaeographer, his brother Karl Friedrich von Kopp (1764-1837) was Foreign Minister of Hessen-Kassel.

Life

After studying law at the University of Marburg , Kopp became an auditor of a Hesse-Kassel guard regiment in 1792. In 1796 he became secretary in the mining department in Kassel , a year later he became secretary to the Hereditary Prince. In 1802 he resigned from the Hessian civil service and took up a position as mine director for the ruling Prince of Sayn-Wittgenstein .

On November 23, 1803, together with his brother Karl Friedrich Kopp, he was raised to the hereditary nobility.

In 1804 Kopp became chamber director of the Prince of Solms-Lich, in 1812 vice director and then director of the court chamber in Arnsberg . After the Congress of Vienna in 1815, Kopp was entrusted with handling the handover of this principality to Prussia .

In 1819 Kopp joined the Hessian Ministry of Finance as a Privy Councilor, where he became President of the Upper Finance Chamber in 1821 and a member of the State Council in 1823. From 1828 he was also the customs director. In 1835 he was appointed a lifelong member of the First Chamber of the Estates of the Grand Duchy of Hesse .

From 1836 to 1846 he was Minister of the Bundestag . He played an important role in the negotiations on the Prussian-Hessian Customs Union in 1831.

From 1841 to 1844 he was Finance Minister of the Grand Duchy of Hesse and finally President of the Grand Ducal Council of State, where he was involved in the decision to build the first railway in Hesse.
