Johann Becker (politician)
Johann Baptist Becker (born February 3, 1869 in Ludwigshöhe ; † October 17, 1951 there ) was a German lawyer and politician ( DVP ).
Life
After Becker, who was of the Roman Catholic faith, first attended the secondary school in Oppenheim , he switched to the grammar school in Mainz , where he graduated from high school in 1887 . He then studied law and political science in Gießen , Leipzig , Munich and Berlin . In Giessen he became a member of the student union Landsmannschaft Chattia . In 1890 he passed the trainee examination. After he had received his doctorate in law in 1892, the Great State Examination in Law followed in 1894. After two years as a court assessor , he became a district attorney in 1896 and a short time later a district judge . In 1897 he moved to the Hessian Ministry of Finance, where he was promoted to chief finance councilor in 1900 and two years later as head of the tax department to ministerial councilor.
At the beginning of the 20th century, he and his brother Jacob founded the Brothers Dr. Becker , that the family has now managed it in the fourth generation and has led it into the Association of German Predicate and Quality Wineries (VDP).
From 1920 to 1923 he was a member of the board of the Rheinische Stahlwerke Duisburg-Meiderich.
Becker was also state chairman of the Hessian Red Cross and chairman of the state association for warriors' homes.
He was buried in the Darmstadt forest cemetery.
Political party
Becker comes from the National Liberal Party , which was reorganized into the German People's Party in 1918 . In 1924 he left the DVP with other representatives of the right wing and founded the short-lived National Liberal Reich Party , which was absorbed into the DNVP in 1925 . However, he was always a member of the Reichstag as a DVP member.
MP
After the First World War he was elected to the Weimar National Assembly and was then a member of the Reichstag until December 1924 . From 1928 to 1930 he was again a member of the Reichstag.
Public offices
Becker was Minister of Finance in the government of the Grand Duchy of Hesse from January 1916 to November 1918 . He was particularly committed to promoting the University of Gießen and the Technical University of Darmstadt . First he held the title of President of the Treasury and then Minister of Finance. His term of office ended with the November Revolution of 1918.
During the phase of hyperinflation in 1922 and 1923 , he served as Reich Minister of Economics .
