Carl Gustav Rudolf Oeser (born November 13, 1858 in Coswig ; † June 3, 1926 in Berlin ) was a German journalist and politician ( German People's Party (German Empire) , Progressive People's Party , later DDP ).

Life and work

Rudolf Oeser was born the son of a canvas manufacturer. After graduating from high school, he studied philosophy and economics in Berlin, then took up a journalistic activity and was editor-in-chief of the Ulmer Zeitung from 1890 . In 1892 he became an employee of the political department of the Frankfurter Zeitung , where he worked from 1897 to 1917 as an editor on economic policy issues. Subsequently, he was chief editor and director of the Ostsee-Zeitung in Stettin .

After the First World War , Oeser was Prussian Minister for Public Works from March 25, 1919 to April 21, 1921, and thus also responsible for the railways in Prussia . He belonged to the state governments led by Prime Ministers Paul Hirsch and Otto Braun . Here he was instrumental in founding the Deutsche Reichsbahn .

From 1921 he was governor of the Prussian province of Saxony before joining the government led by Chancellor Wilhelm Cuno on November 22, 1922 as Reich Interior Minister . From August 13, 1923 to October 11, 1924 he was Reich Minister of Transport in the cabinets of Reich Chancellors Gustav Stresemann and Wilhelm Marx . He then took over the management of the Deutsche Reichsbahn-Gesellschaft as general director until his death. His successor in this function was Julius Dorpmüller .

Party affiliation

Oeser initially belonged to the German People's Party , which was limited to southern Germany and for which he had a mandate in the Reichstag from 1907. After the left-liberal merger in 1910, he was a member and until 1912 a member of the Reichstag of the Progressive People's Party . During the Weimar Republic he was a member of the DDP .

Seats in parliament

Oeser was a member of the Prussian House of Representatives from 1902 to 1919 and a member of the Reichstag from 1907 to 1912 . From 1919 to 1924 he was a member of the Prussian state parliament .

Honors

Oeser was buried next to his first wife Emma in Frankfurt's main cemetery . Oeserstraße in Frankfurt-Nied has been named after Rudolf Oeser since 1928 .
