Wilhelm Schmidt (politician, 1851)

Heinrich Wilhelm Schmidt (born November 28, 1851 in Frankfurt am Main ; † August 22, 1907 ibid) was a German social democratic politician and editor of the Volksstimme in Frankfurt.

Life

Schmidt attended elementary school and completed an apprenticeship in lithography . Until 1891 he worked as an assistant in the learned profession.

He joined the Social Democrats in 1875. From 1878 he was a member of the board of the social democratic election association and from 1887 in the election committee of the city of Frankfurt. From 1891 he was a delegate at numerous social democratic party conferences.

From 1891 he was editor of the social democratic Frankfurt daily newspaper “Volksstimme” and from 1893 also co-owner of the publishing house. Between 1888 and 1893 he was an assessor at the trade court. In 1900 he was one of the co-founders of the “Workers Press Association”. Because of his courageous advocacy of democratic causes, it was inevitable that he was sentenced to numerous fines and once also to prison for press violations.

He was a member of the Reichstag from 1890 until his death . There he represented the constituency of Wiesbaden 6 ( urban district of Frankfurt am Main ).
