August Konrad Hofmann came from middle-class parents. His father Conrad Hofmann (1743–1799) was a judicial officer in Nidda and the son of the Groß-Gerau pastor Konrad Hofmann. The mother, Susanne nee Schneider (1753-1826) was the daughter of the Hessian game master in Kranichstein Johann Ludwig Schneider.

Civil servant career

Hofmann studied law and camera science in Erlangen and Gießen and joined the secretariat of the grand ducal Hessian government in 1797 as a government lawyer. In 1803 he became court chamber councilor and chamber lawyer in the rent chamber of the principality of Starkenburg . 1813 head of the government commission for the takeover of Wimpfen and in 1816 the general commission for the taking over and administration of Rheinhessen and a higher appellate judge .

He was very active in setting up the tax system and the financial system in general, in lowering the rate of interest on the national debt and in regulating the entire national debt system.

He found a lot of opposition in the state parliament from 1838 to 1839, where he vigorously denied the right of the estates to examine unapproved expenses and, under certain circumstances, to delete them.

He was a co-founder of the Darmstadt Music Association.

His contributions to the closer knowledge of the legislation and administration of the Grand Duchy of Hesse (Gießen 1832) were published in the Freimuethiges Mission Statement to Se.
