Eduard von Grolman

Eduard Eugen Aegid Friedrich Freiherr von Grolman (born April 10, 1812 in Gießen ; † March 21, 1890 in Darmstadt ) was a Lieutenant General of the Grand Duke of Hesse and Minister of War .

Life

Eduard was the son of the Hessian State Minister Karl Ludwig Wilhelm von Grolman . Grolman, who was of Protestant denomination, married Charlotte Johannette Auguste Hofmann, daughter of August Konrad Hofmann , on April 19, 1817 in Darmstadt .

Grolman joined the life guard regiment of the Grand Ducal Hessian Army at the age of 16 , advanced to secondary lieutenant in mid-April 1829 and rose to captain in the 3rd Infantry Regiment by May 1846 . As adjutant to the commander of the Hessian Army Division, General von Schäffer-Bernstein , Grolman took part in the battle near Ober-Laudenbach in 1849 during the suppression of the Baden Revolution and was awarded the Red Eagle Order IV class with swords for his behavior . In the further course of his military career he commanded the 1st Infantry Regiment (Leib Guard Regiment) in the battle near Frohnhofen as a colonel in 1866 during the war against Prussia .

On December 28, 1866, Grand Duke Ludwig III appointed him . to Major General and Minister of War (initially with the title of Director of the Ministry and from 1867 with the title of President of the Ministry). In this capacity, Grolman played a key role in ensuring that the Grand Ducal Hessian Division entered the Prussian Army as a unified whole through the military convention of April 7, 1867 . With the appointment of lieutenant general and position à la suite , he resigned from his office as minister of war in 1868 and retired.
