Friedrich von Schäffer-Bernstein
Friedrich Ferdinand Wilhelm von Schäffer-Bernstein (born December 9, 1790 in Bettenhausen , † December 1, 1861 in Darmstadt ) was a Hessian general of infantry and minister of war .
Life
Friedrich was the son of the future general Johann Georg Freiherr von Schäffer-Bernstein and his wife Luise, born Freiin von und zu Mansbach (1757-1810).
On December 15, 1804 Schäffer-Bernstein resigned as Junker one in which members of the Westphalian Brigade Prussian Fusilier Battalion "Ernest" in which he served until October 1806th On February 25, 1807, he joined the army of the Grand Duchy of Hesse (in the Guard Fusilier Battalion) as a second lieutenant and fought against Prussia in the Fourth Coalition War in 1807. In 1809/10 he fought as his father's adjutant on the French side in Spain . From 1813 to 1815 he served as a captain, first on the French and then on the German side in the Wars of Liberation .
In the following decades of peace, Schäffer-Bernstein served in the cavalry and the general staff as well as an envoy in Berlin . On October 23, 1847, he became major general adjutant to the Grand Duke.
In 1849 he took part in the military suppression of the Baden Revolution as commander in chief of the Hessian army division. On the night of 28 on May 29, Schaeffer Bernstein personally led the department, that of enemy troops under Colonel Louis Blenker occupied Worms recaptured. In the battles against the Baden Revolutionary Army under Ludwik Mierosławski , he commanded the bulk of the Neckar Corps under General Eduard von Peucker .
On June 14, 1849, he was appointed head of the War Ministry . He held the title of minister from October 1, 1849. He was also general of the infantry and commander of the army division. He resigned from this command on April 27, 1859 and was appointed Inspector General of the Army Division. He resigned as Minister of War in 1861.
He was married to Bertha geb. d'Orville (1802–1878), with whom he had a daughter and two sons.
