Friedrich Karl Christian Freiherr von Steinling (born November 24, 1777 in Darmstadt ; † September 6, 1851 there ) was a Grand Ducal Hessian officer and minister of war .

Life

origin

He came from the Upper Palatinate noble family of barons von Steinling zu Boden and Stainling. A number of Hessian and Bavarian generals emerged from this family in the 19th century; it became extinct in 1984 in the male line.

Military career

Friedrich Karl Christian von Steinling was the son of a Hessian general and also embarked on a military career. On April 26, 1784, he became free corporal of the Landgraviate of Hessen-Darmstadt and entered active military service as an ensign on September 27, 1792 . On April 20, 1793 he became a lieutenant, on April 14, 1794 first lieutenant, on May 18, 1803 captain, on March 18, 1810 major, on June 18, 1813 lieutenant colonel, on April 9, 1814 he became a colonel, on May 29, 1810 he became a lieutenant colonel. Promoted to major general on October 22, 1836, lieutenant general, and infantry general on August 26, 1848 . He took part in the wars of his time, especially the Napoleonic Wars and the Wars of Liberation .

From 1836 to the March Revolution of 1848/1849 he was Grand Ducal Minister of War, from 1836 to 1842 with the title of President of the War Ministry and from 1842 to March 1848 as Minister of War.
