Emir Rodríguez Monegal (born July 28, 1921 in Melo , † November 14, 1985 in New Haven , Connecticut ) was a Uruguayan writer, Romanist , Lusitanist and Hispanist who taught in the United States.

Life

Rodríguez Monegal was a writer in the Generación del 45 . From 1945 he was the feature editor of the weekly Marcha , and from 1949 he was also the editor of other literary magazines. He received his doctorate in 1956 in Montevideo with the work Andrés Bello y el Romanticismo hispanoamericano (published under the title El otro Andrés Bello. A study of Bello's literary life and work , Caracas 1969).

From 1957 to 1960 he was doing research in England. In the 1960s he held various visiting professorships and from 1966 published the magazine Mundo Nuevo in Paris . From 1969 until his death, Rodríguez Monegal was Professor of Contemporary Latin American Literature at Yale University (from 1973 to 1976 Chairman of the Department for Spanish and Portuguese).

Rodríguez Monegal was friends with Jorge Luis Borges and Pablo Neruda .
