Edith Austin

Edith Lucy Austin (born December 15, 1867 , † July 27, 1953 ; married Edith Greville ) was a British tennis player .

Career

Austin won the British Indoor Championships five times between 1894 and 1899 . At the Wimbledon Championships she reached the final in 1894, but lost there to Blanche Bingley in two sets. Two years later she was again in the final of the All-Comers competition, but this time failed to Alice Pickering . Until 1919 she took part regularly in the individual competition at Wimbledon and made it to the round of 16 that year.

Her strengths were powerful, well-placed strokes and good endurance. She was married to tennis player George Greville .
