The Brothers Dr. Becker is a winery in Ludwigshöhe in Rheinhessen . It belongs to the Association of German Predicate and Quality Wineries .

Viticulture

The winery cultivates an area of 11 hectares according to the specifications of Ecovin (Federal Association of Ecologically Working Wineries). The vineyards are located around the town of Ludwigshöhe in the south of the Rheinhessen wine-growing region .

The offer is based on the quality pyramid, which distinguishes between estate wines, local wines Dienheim and Ludwigshöhe and Großes Gewächs Tafelstein and Falkenberg, which are then also indicated as vineyard locations on the label . The slope of the layers is up to 25%. The orientation of the east and south-east locations enables good solar radiation; they are mostly located in the Rhine terraces , at the foot of the slope and in the Rhine plain.

While in the terrace Lössderivate , some with severe dislocation of limestone and its weathering forms as ground prevail, can be found in the Rhine valley rather than sandy loam terroir .

Eco philosophy

Clover , grasses and herbs as greenery, as well as the spreading of natural compost, horse manure and rock flour should strengthen the natural fertility of the soil and the resistance of the vines to diseases and pests. Beneficial insects are sometimes used specifically for pest control.

A separate weather station makes it easier to schedule climate-sensitive vineyard work.

Another deepening of the ecological economy in the interplay of natural rhythms is the additional demeter certification since 2008.

Grape variety mirror

The managing varietal , with 40 percent of the cultivated area of Riesling , as well as the typical Rheinhessen Silvaner with 20%, Scheurebe , Müller-Thurgau , Gewurztraminer and white Burgundervarietäten ( Pinot Blanc , Pinot Gris ) in white wine spectrum as well as Pinot Noir and Regent than red varieties.

history

At the beginning of the 20th century the wine-growing business was founded by the two brothers Johann and Jacob Becker . The basic stock was the part-time agricultural business inherited from their father, which they received by pooling the inheritance. Since then, the resulting winery has been family-owned. Lotte Pfeffer-Müller is now the fourth generation of the family of the property that is inherited from mother to daughter. In the fifth generation, the sons Tillmann and Lorenz support the work of Lotte Pfeffer-Müller and Hans Müller. In the 1970s, the company specialized in viticulture from the then common mixed agricultural working method and joined the VDP. The winery is one of the founding members of the Rheinhessen Regional Association, the oldest regional association of the Federal Association of Ecologically Working Wineries in Germany ( Ecovin ). Lotte Pfeffer-Müller is its chairman.

The homestead of the Dr. Becker, at Mainzer Straße 3, consists of a four-sided courtyard, the main house of which has a hipped roof, partly with half-timbering, was built around 1830. A baroque redesign took place around 1896. The buildings are classified as cultural monuments of the Rhineland-Palatinate local community Ludwigshöhe .
