The distillery was founded in 1839 by James Kennedy near Langholm on the Tarras River . In its 75-year history, the distillery has changed hands several times. However, further information is only sparse in the literature. A detailed description of the distillery is given by Alfred Barnard , who visited it in the mid-1880s.
