Lists on the subject

The .700 Nitro Express is one of the largest and most powerful cartridges for non-military long guns . It is mainly used in the field of big game hunting.

technical description

.700 Nitro Express next to a .45 ACP (center)

The cylindrical, slightly conical shell shape of the cartridge with rim is based on historical black powder cartridges from the 19th century such as the .45-70 Government or the .50-90 Sharps cartridge . In comparison, modern 21st century rifle cartridges such as the .300 Winchester Short Magnum have a different shape; they can be recognized by a pronounced shoulder on the cartridge between the cargo space and the case mouth. The cartridge's propellant charge is made of nitrocellulose powder. The projectile is 65 grams for hunting ammunition comparatively heavy. The ballistic performance of the .700 Nitro Express is below the 12.7 × 99 mm NATO cartridge . That is why it is usually used for much shorter distances than the .50 BMG .

Development history

The .700 Nitro Express cartridge was developed by Jim Bell and William Feldstein in 1988 and manufactured by Holland & Holland in London . Feldstein had tried unsuccessfully to get H&H to produce a .600 Nitro Express. When Bell and Feldstein developed the .700 NE cartridge, they caught the interest of Holland & Holland , who were looking for a new cartridge for big game hunting.

reception

The cartridge is partially rejected because of the weapons that are too heavy for the purpose. The manufacture of these cartridge ammunition is mainly carried out by the Kynoch company . A-Square cartridges are no longer available. The unit price of the cartridges is around 60 euros and more.
