Joe Madureira (born December 3, 1974 in Philadelphia ; mædəˈrærə, nickname Joe Mad ) is an American comic book artist and video game designer . Madureira is best known for his work on the X-Men series for Marvel Comics (1994–1997) and the comic series Battle Chasers (1998–2001).

biography

Joe Madureira was hired by Marvel as an intern in 1991. The then 16-year-old New York High School of Art and Design student's first publication was an eight-page story about the comic book hero Northstar in the ongoing anthology Marvel Comics Presents . In the years to come, Joe Madureira worked on other projects for Marvel. His contributions to the broad X-Men universe are particularly well known. In 1994 he became the main draftsman of the series Uncanny X-Men , and among other things developed the new uniforms of the protagonists for the "Age of Apocalypse" storyline as well as uniforms influenced by the style of Japanese manga within the regular series. Madureira was also responsible for a brief remodeling of the Avengers . In 1997 he left the Uncanny X-Men to work on his own production called Battle Chasers . Battle Chasers was first published by Wildstorm Comics before the publisher was sold to DC Comics . Nine parts of the series appeared in a row, with the publication intervals increasing. At the end of the ninth part, the series was canceled because the tenth episode would have meant the beginning of a new storyline that he could not have continued.

Joe Madureira then switched to the computer game industry and was employed as a designer for a game called Dragonkind at Tri-Lunar Studios. When they filed for bankruptcy, he moved to Realm Interactive, which at the time produced Trade Wars: Dark Millennium . Realm Interactive was bought by NCsoft , where Madureira continued the game under the name Exarch until it finally appeared under the name Dungeon Runners . During his time as a game designer, he created cover illustrations for game magazines and comics at irregular intervals.

Madureira returned to the comic industry to work on Marvel's The Ultimates 3 with writer Jeph Loeb . A cover drawn by Madureira was presented by IGN in July 2007.

After leaving NCsoft, Madureira founded Vigil Games with former NCsoft colleagues. Vigil was acquired by THQ in March 2006 . The first track to appear in 2010 was Darksiders , for which Madureira was in charge as artistic director . Due to the bankruptcy of the parent company THQ, Vigil Games was closed in 2013. In 2015 Madureira and former colleagues founded the independent studio Airship Syndicate . The development of the game Battle Chasers: Nightwar was financed through Kickstarter . The role-play adaptation of his comics Battle Chaser was released in 2017.
