The Geschwister-Scholl-Gymnasium was founded in 1903 as the "Städtisches Realprogymnasium mit Realschule (i. E.)" with a view to the practical training needs of middle-class children. Since 2009 it has been the only general high school in Velbert with an all-day concept. It bears the name in memory of the Scholl siblings who were executed for their resistance against National Socialism .

history

When the Geschwister-Scholl-Gymnasium started with 41 students in the Kaiserstraße in Easter 1903, it was named "Städtisches Realprogymnasium mit Realschule (i. E.)". In January 1906, it moved into the building in today's Friedrich-Ebert-Straße, which was only inaugurated on June 25, 1906 and which is now the Nikolaus-Ehlen-Gymnasium .

After the Second World War , an independent girls' high school and a secondary school were spun off. In November 1964 they moved into the building on Poststrasse and thus received the name "Gymnasium Poststrasse". The girls' high school took over the building that had been left behind on Friedrich-Ebertstrasse and Blumenstrasse. On February 22, 1983, the 40th anniversary of Hans and Sophie Scholl's death, the Poststrasse grammar school was given its current name in their honor.

Since 1991 the school with all classes and courses has been at its current location in Velbert-Birth. This move has its origins in the resolution of the Velbert City Council on February 12, 1986 to set up a comprehensive school in the school building on Poststrasse .

From 2004, the aging building was completely renovated. A new interior painting, the installation of new walls and smoke protection doors to comply with fire protection guidelines and a complete renovation of the facade were carried out.

In July 2012 Angelika Vogt handed over the school management to Reinhard Schürmann after 14 years of service.

School concept

Exchange program

The high school has had a good relationship with the Velbert twin town of Châtellerault in France for many years , so that every year 9th grade students with French lessons are able to take part in a ten-day student exchange.

In the 10th grade, students have the choice between an "Educational Stay" with overnight stays with host families in Great Britain or a trip to Berlin for political education.

Level 11 students also have the option of spending several months abroad in New Zealand.

Bilingual teaching

At each level there is a bilingual class that is characterized by special support in the field of English. In grades 5 and 6, the students in the bilingual branch receive two additional hours of English lessons per week, in which they are increasingly prepared for the geography lessons in English that began in grade 7. Politics and history are added in grades 8 and 10.

cooperation

The cooperation with the Nikolaus-Ehlen Gymnasium, which is also located in Velbert-Mitte, is particularly pronounced in the upper secondary level . Due to the course system that begins in grade 11, the students are taught by both schools together. In this way it is possible for more different courses to be created and for the students' choice of subjects to be better taken into account.

Vocational preparation in upper secondary level

Thanks to a cooperation with the business juniors of the city of Velbert, the University of Duisburg-Essen and the Employment Agency , apart from discussions with a career counselor during class time, career orientation days can also be offered, which include detailed information on opportunities for further education at a university, the Participation in lectures at the university itself and a company tour, and professional application training.

Dispute settlement

For many years there has been the mediator program "Gingko" by and for students , which offers students the opportunity to resolve problems and disputes among themselves and without the influence of teachers.

Self-learning center of upper secondary level

Since 2006 there has been a self-study center in the upper level building, supervised by students and parents, in order to offer students access to both modern and classic media during and between class times. In addition to a diverse selection of specialist books, there is also international magazines and computer workstations.

Performances and projects

The students of the theater AGs present the results of their work with several performances in the auditorium, the school's own theater. In addition, there are projects in the context of different subjects that are presented at irregular intervals. The literature course of the upper level or the music courses of the lower secondary level with integrated instrumental training also use this opportunity to introduce themselves.
