The FDP held Europe Day 1999 on January 23, 1999 in Frankfurt am Main . It was an assembly of representatives to draw up the list for the 1999 European elections . The meeting took place in the Congress Center of Messe Frankfurt .

Course and resolutions

The delegates decided on guiding principles for the European elections. This included “more jobs through a competitive European Union”, a stable euro, “rapid expansion of the Union”, a “fair financial system and [a] noticeable net relief for Germany”, a reform of structural policy, “competitive agriculture in an enlarged EU ”, a strengthening of democracy, the ability to act and closeness to the citizens, the guarantee of internal security and civil rights, the responsibility for global environmental protection and the shared responsibility for peace and freedom are called for. Globalization must be seen as an opportunity.

The delegates elected the former Federal Minister of Economics, Helmut Haussmann, as the top candidate. He received 579 of 606 votes cast. The non-party canoe athlete Birgit Fischer ran for second place on the federal list .
