decisions

Thomas Dehler gave a speech on the subject of “For a radical liberal policy”. On the morning of April 5, 1967, the party congress “unanimously” adopted the “Goals of Progress”. Action program of the Free Democratic Party (107 theses) ”. The motto of the party congress was: "Winner of Progress - FDP."

Erich Mende remained party chairman . At the party congress, the young democrats , supported by journalists Henri Nannen ( Stern ) and Rudolf Augstein ( Der Spiegel ), tried to persuade the party leadership to resign through targeted disruptive actions. A motion by Rudolf Augstein to have the right to speak in the plenum of the party congress was rejected very narrowly with 128 to 118 votes. Augstein had planned to hold his speech at a Brockhaus , since Mende had told him in the run-up to the party congress that he should look up what political liberalism meant in the dictionary. The close voting relationship was also an indicator of the party's disagreement over the New Ostpolitik . In the substantive resolution of the party congress, it was possible to agree on a compromise formula for the Oder-Neisse border : the traditional formula that borders can only be finally decided upon with a peace treaty, was added under pressure from the left wing, "that a possible merging of the separated Parts of Germany should not "fail because of territorial issues. This formulation enabled broad approval for the entire resolution.
