The FDP held the first Europe Day 2004 on January 17, 2004 in Saarbrücken . It was an assembly of representatives to draw up the list for the 2004 European elections .

On Europe Day, the program “We can do Europe better! For a free and fair Europe ”.
Silvana Koch-Mehrin from Baden-Württemberg was elected as the top candidate with around 92 percent of the delegate votes. Alexander Graf Lambsdorff from North Rhine-Westphalia and Jorgo Chatzimarkakis from Saarland followed on the list . The welcome by the Saarland FDP state chairman Christoph Hartmann was followed by speeches by FDP chairman Guido Westerwelle and his deputy Rainer Brüderle .
Because of a formal error in the election, the party congress had to be repeated around two months later, on March 28, 2004 in Bonn .
