His father was Joseph August Poty, his mother Marie Louise b. Farion. Paul Poty attended secondary school at the Collège in Chalon-sur-Saône . From a young age he devoted himself to waterfowl hunting . With the atlas of Baron Jean Charles Louis Tardif d'Hamonville (1830–1899) under his arm, he followed his passion for ornithology with his friend C. Taitot, who came from a traditional hunter family, between Allerey-sur-Saône and Chauvort .

Professionally, he turned to medicine, first took care of the prenatal care in Dijon , worked as external staff at the hospital in Lyon , was in World War I pulled in and with two medals Croix de guerre excellent. In 1921 he received his doctorate in medicine from the University of Lyon with the dissertation De la présence du bacille de Lœffler dans les organes diphtériques . In the same year he settled in Louhans. He attended boarding school in Saint Etienne, worked as a doctor at the Société nationale des chemins de fer français , as deputy president in various hospices , as president of the Red Cross and was awarded the Order for Services to Health Care .

One of his strokes of fate was the death of his daughter in 1947, which was followed by that of his wife in 1956. He himself retired in 1953 after a heart attack.

When Paul Paris (1875–1938) founded Alauda , an ornithological specialist journal, in 1929 , it was Jacques de Chavigny (1880–1963), Jacques Delamain (1874–1953), Adrien Joseph Louis Lavauden (1881–1935), Noël Mayaud (1899–1989), Henri Heim de Balsac (1899–1979), Henri Louis Ernest Jouard (1896–1938), Poty and Paris, who sat in the editorial office. When the Sociéte d'études ornithologique was founded on March 25, 1933, Poty was one of the founding members.

In 1910 his first ornithological publication appeared on black-headed gulls , which he had observed in Lyon. It was not until 1928, inspired by Paris and Jouard, that his enthusiasm for avifauna gained new momentum. After founding Alauda, he first published smaller articles about the bird life in the Saône-et-Loire department . His obituaries and biographies of Louis Célestin Lomont (1849–1929), Ferdinand Bernard de Montessus de Ballore (1817–1899) and Jouard, who died early, were important contemporary testimonies to French ornithologists.

In 1946 he met Jacques de la Comble (1908-1999) who visited him in his house. Together they sorted his bellows collection , a collection much of which came from Jouard and a Mr. Fou, a Chinese who worked in Dijon. Most of the exhibits went to Olivier Meylan and Gérard Berthe . During this time he was also the French correspondent for the Swiss trade journal Nos Oiseaux .

In 1947, a bird census was carried out in the Saône-et-Loire department with de la Comble and him, which followed the guidelines of the census by Georges de Vogüé from the Côte-d'Or department . For lack of funds, the two manuscripts were never published. Ornithological trips took him to Dombes , with his youngest of three sons to Baume-les-Messieurs and in 1961 as one of his personal highlights to the center of Burgundy. Here he attended a conference in Varennes-le-Grand .

In 1962 Paul Poty died of a pulmonary embolism.
