His father was called Marie Louis Jules Mayaud, his mother Marie Adrienne Elisabeth geb. Devienne. On January 28, 1935, he married Simone Jeanne Marie de Nacquard.

His first shorter ornithological publication from 1925 dealt with the silk warbler ( Cettia cetti ) he had observed in the Maine-et-Loire department . In 1934 he described Luscinia svecica namnetum, a subspecies of the bluethroat that was new to science . His scientific path was unusual because he had no connection to the universities. He came from a wealthy family from Saumur, whose fortunes arose from industry and whose preferences were in viticulture, hunting and forestry. Between 1900 and 1940 it was not uncommon in eastern France for such a landed gentry to deal with questions of natural history. The young Mayaud was therefore interested in the avifauna from an early age. He would probably have remained an amateur orithologist who pursued his hobby rather for hedonistic motives, had he not met the French zoologist Louis Marcellin Bureau (1847-1936), who directed his research into orderly scientific paths. Mayaud wrote an obituary for him in Alauda in 1937 , which was followed by a further appreciation of his work in L'Oiseau et la Revue française d'ornithologie .

When in 1936 Inventaire des oiseaux de France , a work he published in collaboration with Henri Heim de Balsac (1899–1979) and Henri Louis Ernest Jouard (1896–1938), this marked a step into modern ornithological research in his home country France. Mayaud did not stop with the book, and many more comments and remarks on the ornithology of his homeland followed in various magazines.

Mayaud moved to the Center national de la recherche scientifique , a public body that gave talented people like him the opportunity to research. For Pierre-Paul Grassé (1895–1985) he wrote a large part of the fifteenth volume of Traité de zoologie, anatomie, systématique, biologie from 1950, a volume that dealt exclusively with birds.

Together with his friend Heim de Balsac, he published the work Les oiseaux du Nord-Ouest de L'Afrique in 1962 : distribution géographique, écologie, migrations, reproduction . Since Heim de Balsac did not like writing very much, his contribution to the work consisted more of his excellent powers of observation and the gathering of relevant information. Balsac's contributions from this period were considered polemical or they criticized the research work of Anglo-Saxon scientists. So it is thanks to Mayaud's tenacity that urged him to deliver his observations and comments for the good of science to him. The result is one of the most important books on the avifauna of Africa, the Maghreb and the Sahel zone with information on systematics , morphology , distribution, breeding season , seasonal bird migration and ecology . His role in this work on exotic birds should not be underestimated, although he himself was never on research trips. Even so, he developed a fondness for birds from the North African region. Shortly before his death, he circulated a manuscript among his colleagues, which was published posthumously .

When Paul Paris founded Alauda , an ornithological specialist journal, in 1929 , it was Jacques de Chavigny (1880–1963), Jacques Delamain (1874–1953), Adrien Joseph Louis Lavauden (1881–1935), Heim de Balsac, Paul Poty (1889– 1962), Jouard and Mayaud who sat in the editorial office. After the death of most of the founding members, he continued the magazine with Heim de Balsac. When the Sociéte d'études ornithologique was founded on March 25, 1933, Mayaud was one of the founding members. At that time he lived in the Saumur at 1, rue de Bordeaux . Until his death he was honorary president of the society. For many years he acted as a driver of society and was often the mediator between ornithologists in disputes.

Mayaud was physically and mentally active until shortly before his death. So his death came suddenly and unexpectedly for the French ornithological society.

Dedication names

In 1969 Hans Kummerlöwe described Passer domesticus mayaudi , a synonym for a subspecies of the house sparrow ( Passer domesticus biblicus Hartert, E , 1904). Christian Erard , Georges Hémery and Eric Pasquet named in his honor a subspecies of binding racing bird ( Rhinoptilus cinctus mayaudi ).
