Jacques Delamain

Jacques Auguste Henry Delamain mostly Jacques Delamain (born December 20, 1874 in Jarnac , † February 5, 1953 in Saint-Brice ) was a French ornithologist , bird conservationist and publisher.

His father, a dealer, was named Philippe Henry Albert Delamain, his mother Elisabeth Adrienne nee. In. He became interested in birds at the early age of seven. At the instigation of Jérôme Tharaud (1874–1953), who was a comrade in Flanders during the First World War from 1914 to 1917 , he published his first book Pourquoi les oiseaux chantent in 1928 . The book, which was awarded by the Académie des Sciences , was translated into English and German, so that it gained international reputation. Later, Les Jours et les Nuits des Oiseaux , Les oiseaux s'installent et s'en vont and two volumes under the name Portraits d'oiseaux were published . A third volume was to follow, but remained unfinished. The plates for this work were provided by the artists Roger Reboussin (1881–1965) and Jean de Bosschère (1878–1953).

Certainly his biological research began with the outdated traditions of the Englishman Gilbert White (1720–1793) and the French Alphonse Toussenel (1803–1885). Nevertheless, he expanded his ornithological knowledge by studying the birds of the Charente department with infinite patience . For example, he has described new details on the meadow harrier's courtship behavior . His meticulous observations, including the most common species, revealed many new details about their behavior.

As an excellent expert on endangered species, he protects them from hunters and gatherers and has turned his house into a real bird sanctuary. He was always ready to pass on his knowledge. B. James Jonas Walling (1924-) in May 1952 had the pleasure of being introduced to ornithology at his home. Its numerous birdhouses attracted hoopoes , reversible necks and black redstart , while the mountain warbler , silk warbler and ortolan nested in the neighborhood .

Together with his brother-in-law Jacques Boutelleau, also known under the name Jacques Chardonne , and his brother Maurice Delamain (1883–1972), he bought the Editions Stock publishing house in 1921 . Here he enables his wife Germaine (1876–1956) born. Boutelleau together with him Terres de silence (The Silent Places) and Une poursuite dans les terres de silence (The Silent Places) by Stewart Edward White (1873-1946), Les Enfants du zodiaque (Children of the zodiac) by Rudyard Kipling (1865 –1936), Voisins mystérieux (Neighbors Unknown) by Charles George Douglas Roberts (1860–1943) and Portrait dans un miroir (Portrait in a Mirror) by Charles Morgan (1894–1958) to publish some translations into French. At the same time he is building a science library, which is now located at 155 rue Saint Honoré in Paris .

When Paul Paris (1875–1938) founded Alauda , an ornithological specialist magazine, in 1929 , it was Jacques de Chavigny (1880–1963), Paul Poty (1889–1962), Adrien Joseph Louis Lavauden (1881–1935), Noël Mayaud (1899–1989), Henri Heim de Balsac (1899–1979), Henri Louis Ernest Jouard (1896–1938), Delamain and Paris, who were on the editorial staff. When the Sociéte d'études ornithologique was founded on March 25, 1933, Delamain was one of the founding members. At that time he lived in the Jarnac in the La Branderaie de Gardépée .
