Formosa is an offshore wind farm on Formosa Strait in the Republic of China (Taiwan) . The project consists of several sub-projects. Formosa 1 phase 1 and phase 2 have been completed. It is Taiwan's first offshore wind farm. The wind farm is located about 3–6 kilometers off the coast of Miaoli in northwestern Taiwan at water depths of 15–30 meters. Construction of Formosa 2 is scheduled to start in 2020.
Formosa 1 phase 1
In the first phase two were wind turbines of the type Siemens SWT4.0-120 built. These each have an installed capacity of four megawatts . The two turbines were installed in October 2016. At the end of April 2017, the Taiwanese Ministry of Economic Affairs issued the operating license and operations began.
The plants are owned 50% by Macquarie , 35% by Ørsted and 15% by Swancor .
Formosa 1 phase 2
In the second phase, the wind farm was expanded to include 20 SWT-6.0-154 turbines from Siemens Gamesa . The installed capacity has thus increased to 128 MW. The expansion was completed in 2019.
The wind farm is operated by a joint venture between Macquarie Capital Ltd. (50% stake), Ørsted (35%) and the local project developer Swancor Renewable Energy Company Ltd. (15%) operated. The financing is provided by a consortium of eleven international and local banks. 533 million euros will be financed over a period of 16 years. This marks the first ever offshore wind power financing from Taiwan.
Formosa 2
In the second project, the construction of 47 Siemens Gamesa SG 8.0-167 wind turbines with a capacity of 376 MW on jacket foundations is planned. The client is again a consortium made up of Macquarie Capital Ltd. (75%) and Swancor Renewable Energy Company Ltd. (25%). Commissioning could take place at the end of 2021.
