Jacques de Chavigny

Jacques de Chavigny (born January 7, 1880 , † May 4, 1963 ) was a French ornithologist or oologist .

Jacques de Chavigny saw himself as an amateur ornithologist rather than a researcher. Nevertheless, after the First World War, he played an important role in the revival of studies on avifauna in France and North Africa.

From an early age he was interested in birds and especially in their nests and eggs, which he eventually began to collect. Even though he mainly worked for an insurance company called Métropole-Incendie , of which he became managing director in 1936, his scientific curiosity was always present. He attended a medical preparation course and went to Tunisia for some time to devote himself to agriculture . Through his excellent researched studies, he got a foothold in the natural sciences and earned an excellent reputation among colleagues. Even if he only viewed ornithology and especially oology as a hobby, he worked extremely meticulously and conscientiously in his publications. His oological collection was carefully and meticulously put together. De Chavigny specialized in the western Palearctic .

If he bought eggs from traders for whom there was no evidence, he turned to French and foreign experts for verification in order to identify them beyond doubt.

His stay in Tunisia resulted in a lifelong interest in things from North Africa. In this way he collected valuable material from the region and managed to win over influential forest managers and administrative employees for his purposes. His collected materials and reports were of incomparable value to science. Thanks to him, Henri Heim de Balsac (1899–1979) was able to publish a number of publications on the reproductive cycles in North Africa. His remarkable collection of documents was eventually also used for Les oiseaux du Nord-Ouest de L'Afrique: distribution geographique, écologie, migrations, reproduction by Heim de Balsac and Noël Mayaud (1899–1989).

When Paul Paris (1875–1938) founded Alauda , an ornithological journal, in 1929 , it was Paul Poty (1889–1962), Jacques Delamain (1874–1953), Adrien Joseph Louis Lavauden (1881–1935), Noël Mayaud, Henri Heim de Balsac, Henri Louis Ernest Jouard (1896–1938), de Chavigny and Paris, who sat in the editorial office. When the Sociéte d'études ornithologique was founded on March 25, 1933, de Chavigny was one of the founding members. At that time he lived in La Varenne-Saint-Hilaire at 15, allée Saint-Léonard .
