Francis Charles Robert Jourdain

Reverend Francis Charles Robert Jourdain (born March 4, 1865 in Ashbourne , Derbyshire , † February 27, 1940 ) was a British amateur ornithologist and oologist . He was the founder of the British Oological Association , which was renamed the Jourdain Society after his death .

His father was a vicar in the rural deanery of Ashbourne-cum-Mapleton. Jourdain studied at Magdalen College , where he graduated in 1887 with a Bachelor of Arts . He was ordained in 1890 . He led the Oxford University's first expedition to Spitsbergen , and his ornithological interest took him to Holland , Denmark , Spain , Morocco , Corsica , Romania , Iceland and Algeria . Jourdain was a member of the British Ornithologists' Union , the German Ornithological Society and many other ornithological societies. He was also a Fellow of the Zoological Society of London , President of the Oxford Ornithological Society and, from 1909, deputy editor of British Birds magazine .
