In the course of the fall of the site from Mariahilfer Straße to Wiental, the two-winged facility copes with a level difference of around 2.5 m. The steps of the north wing have been provided with ramps for prams , although information boards warn of the relatively steep gradient.

In September 1998 the staircase, which until then, like Eggerthgasse, at the northern end of which it adjoins, was named after Karl Eggerth Eggerthstiege , was named after the Viennese cultural politician Viktor Matejka .

The staircase has been a listed building since 2003 ( list entry ).
