The Fillgraderstiege is a staircase in the 6th Viennese district Mariahilf . It connects the Fillgradergasse with the Theobaldgasse .

history

The outside staircase was built between 1905 and 1907 according to a design by the architect Max Hegele and is attributed to the Viennese Art Nouveau . It overcomes part of the difference in level between the Wien River in the south and Mariahilfer Strasse in the north of Mariahilf. The facility was named after the bell founder Marie Anna Fillgrader, who was charitable in this area.

After one of the two flight of stairs had to be closed in 1981 due to structural damage, the facility was renovated from 1982 to 1984, among other things the Art Nouveau elements were restored and a drainage system was installed. Between 1984 and 1985, a standing café with a picture gallery was built into the previously unused interior of the stairs, which opened on August 1, 1985 (closed since 2010).

In 2004, in the course of an international investigation, the Fillgraderstiege, now a listed building, was chosen by a jury of 80 art professors as the fourth most beautiful staircase in Europe.
