Staircases in Mariahilf
Vienna's 6th district of Mariahilf , together with the 9th district of Alsergrund, has the steepest topography in Vienna's inner districts. In order to compensate for the differences in level, which make up almost 30 meters in altitude between Wienfluss and Mariahilfer Straße , numerous exposed staircases were built:
- The Amonstiege , built in 1862, connects Stiegengasse with Windmühlgasse . There is the lower entrance to the Raimundhof , a through-house to Mariahilfer Straße 45 with stairs on the courtyard side.
- The Capistranstiege was built in the 1980s and connects Capistrangasse with Fillgradergasse .
- The Corneliusstiege in its current form was completed in 1957 and connects Corneliusgasse with Gumpendorfer Strasse .
- The Fillgraderstiege was built from 1907 to 1907 based on designs by the architect Max Hegele . The Art Nouveau staircase connects Fillgradergasse with Theobaldgasse .
- The Rahlstiege in its current form was completed in 1870, but a staircase already existed at this point in the 18th century. It connects Rahlgasse with Mariahilfer Strasse. At the top of the stairs is the goose girl fountain designed by Anton Paul Wagner .
- The Viktor-Matejka-Stiege connects Kaunitzgasse with Eggerthgasse and Luftbadgasse . It was originally called Eggerthstiege and was named after Viktor Matejka in 1998 .
The Fillgraderstiege, Viktor-Matejka-Stiege and Rahlstiege as well as the goose girl fountain at the Rahlstiege are now under monument protection .
