Alexandar Stoilow (also written Aleksandar Stoilov , Bulgarian Александър Стоилов ; * 1810 in Eski Zağra , Ottoman Empire , † September 27, 1891 in Sofia ), known as Alexander Exarch (Bulgarian Александър Екзархist, Enlightenment from the time Bulgarian journalist), was a Bulgarian journalist of the Bulgarian National Revival and fighter for an independent Bulgarian Orthodox Church (see Bulgarian Exarchate ). In the Turkish-speaking world he was also known under the name Hacı Beyoğlu .

Life

Stoilow was trained first in his native Eski Zağra, later at a Greek school in Istanbul and in Bucharest, Budapest, Vienna and Munich. From 1836 he first studied medicine, then mathematics in Paris and was also employed at the Ottoman embassy there from 1838. In 1841 he accompanied Adolphe Jérôme Blanqui as a translator , who was sent by the French government to investigate the situation after an uprising in the western Bulgarian territories.

Between 1849 and 1862 he was, with Russian support, editor of the newspaper Zarigradski westnik (Bulgarian Цариградски вестник , German Konstantinopeler Zeitung) in Constantinople . It was next to the newspaper " Bulgarski orel " (Bulgar. "Българский орел", German Bulgarian eagle), published in 1846 by Ivan Bogorow in Leipzig, one of the first Bulgarian newspapers. The struggle for an independent Bulgarian church , which was founded in 1870, was significantly supported by publications in the newspaper .

Between 1866 and 1870 he worked as a diplomat in the Ottoman embassy in Paris. After the end of the Russo-Ottoman War in 1878, he tried unsuccessfully for the throne of the newly founded Principality of Bulgaria .
