The MDR Music Summer is a music festival of the MDR that has existed since 1992 and spans three federal states ( Saxony , Saxony-Anhalt and Thuringia ) . It started with 15 concerts and had a maximum of 104 concerts. In the future, a number of concerts of around 60 is to be maintained, with parity between the countries being particularly taken into account.

The festival covers the otherwise rather weak months of July and August. Mainly international stars, artists and ensembles and those from the broadcasting area of the MDR are invited. The third mainstay of the program are the concerts with ensembles from the MDR. Around 90% permanent and around 10% new venues are included as venues each year. Above all, there are buildings of historical and touristic interest, such as the Semperoper in Dresden , the Wartburg in Eisenach or the Magdeburg Cathedral .

The structure of most concerts in concert series is characteristic, such as B. "Johann Sebastian Bach and his cities", "Concerts along the Romanesque Road", "Concerts at the Wartburg" or the series for contemporary music "Klangrausch". Since 2004 the series "Living Monasteries" and from 2006 the series "Garden Dreams" have been new. The spectrum of music played ranges from the beginning of the first millennium to today's modern times. Primarily the epochs of classical music from baroque to modern, but also more and more cross-over projects and jazz / folk elements are served.

The audience consists of around 70% local listeners (within a 50 km radius) and around 30% tourist listeners. The tendency is towards regular guests, more than 50% of whom come from the old federal area. Of the average of 60 concerts, around 15 to 20 are broadcast live or recorded by MDR Figaro .
