Arne Birkenstock (born December 7, 1967 in Siegen ) is a German author and director .

Life

Arne Birkenstock studied economics , politics , history and Romance studies in Cologne , Buenos Aires and Córdoba and, during his studies, realized the first TV documentaries for the series Unter deutscher Dächern (ARD) and Menschen first-hand . Together with André Schäfer, he produced the award-winning documentary You can see with your ears - About football madness on Saturdays on the radio (1999).

His first feature documentary, 12 Tangos - Adios Buenos Aires , premiered in 2005. In addition to various documentaries for television such as the WDR series 7000 Kilometers of Homesickness - A Year in China or Sandpit Warriors about German NCOs who are trained as educators at a Bundeswehr technical college for the documentary film series Grand Format on ARTE (together with Katherina Knees), Birkenstock also performed he directed the documentary films Chandani und ihr Elefant (together with Jan Tengeler) for which he received the 2011 German Film Award in the category of best children's and youth film , and the music documentary Sound of Heimat - Deutschland singt (together with Jan Tengeler).

Arne Birkenstock's cinema documentary Beltracchi - The Art of Forgery about the art forger Wolfgang Beltracchi was awarded the 2014 German Film Prize in the category Best Documentary . The film had its international premiere at the World Film Festival in Montréal . The film adaptation of the documentary theater project The Moscow Trials by Swiss director Milo Rau , which he produced, was honored with a "Special Award" at the Festival of German Films in Ludwigshafen am Rhein in 2014.

Arne Birkenstock produced Milo Raus' film and transmedia project Das Kongo Tribunal and, together with filmmakers Yasemin and Nesrin Şamdereli, their film “The Night of the Nights” and worked on other projects with directors such as Uli Gaulke and Enrique Sánchez Lansch .

Arne Birkenstock wrote books on tango and Latin American music As a scientific author, Birkenstock also wrote studies for the State Chancellery of North Rhine-Westphalia, the Cologne Cultural Council, the Grimme Institute and the Federal Ministry of Family Affairs . He organized several cultural-political symposia in his hometown of Cologne.

In January 2014, Arne Birkenstock was appointed by the Minister of State for Culture Monika Grütters for three years to the committee "Production of full-length feature films and documentaries (A)" of the federal government's cultural film funding; since 2016 he has also been a member of the non-fiction commission at the Zürcher Filmstiftung . Birkenstock is a board member of the German Film Academy , also a member of the European Film Academy , the German Academy for Television and the Documentary Film Working Group , where he was a member of the board from 2011 to 2014. He is involved in the advisory board of the Kunstsalon Köln and in the board of trustees of AFS Intercultural Encounters, with whom he spent a year in the USA in 1984/85 as an exchange student .

Arne Birkenstock is married, lives in Cologne and has two children. As a sideline, Birkenstock plays the accordion in the Cologne dialect band Schmackes . Arne Birkenstock is the eldest son of the Cologne defense lawyer Reinhard Birkenstock and grandson of the aviation pioneer Hans Jacobs .
