Art Salon Cologne

The KunstSalon is a Cologne initiative to promote art and culture that was founded in 1994 by Peter Bach . The work of the non-profit association is financed exclusively privately. The association awards several cultural prizes and supports various projects across all disciplines. The KunstSalon is located in an industrial building on Brühler Strasse in Cologne, which was built around 1900 as a coppersmith's shop. In 1996 it was converted into today's cultural center.

Goal setting

The aim of the KunstSalon is to support art and culture financially and ideally, to convey the necessity of their support and to create access for interested citizens. Civic engagement forms the basis for its activities.

The uniqueness of the KunstSalon lies in its cross-disciplinary orientation. The cultural scene is supported with funding projects from the fields of visual arts, drama, literature, music, dance and film.

This includes:

  • Scholarships: Villa Aurora Scholarship, Studio Scholarship, CROSSOVER Scholarship, Step Up (structural funding for dance)
  • Sponsorship awards: KunstSalon Choreography Award, Theater Author Award 2010–2012, KunstSalon Theater Award 2017
  • Funding projects: KunstSalon-Orchester, Zwirnerschule - music funding for everyone, Culturelink - projects for and with refugees
  • Festivals: literature in the houses of the city, music in the houses of the city

The friends of the KunstSalon, the drama friends and the members of the dance and films society support the funding projects and the cultural scene with their commitment.

As part of the project Music in the Houses of the City , hosts interested in culture invite you to their private rooms in Cologne. This initiative was subsequently expanded to include Berlin, Hamburg and, since 2010, within the framework of RUHR.2010 - European Capital of Culture, also to the Ruhr area. Above all, it offers a stage for young musicians. According to the same concept, the KunstSalon also organizes the literature festival in the houses of the city .

An KunstSalon orchestra under the direction of Klaus the Geiger plays a repertoire of klezmer , tango , classical , salon music and improvisations .

KunstSalon Foundation

In 2001 the KunstSalon Foundation was established, into which the entrepreneur Andreas Schmitz brought in a lottery prize of 1 million marks and which is seeking additional donations. The foundation transfers the practical implementation and support of the funding measures to the KunstSalon e. V. The most important goal of the foundation is to promote modern dance. Donors can set their own priorities.
