Mercedes Riederer (* 1952 in Munich ) is a German journalist .

Life

Mercedes Riederer began her journalistic career as a 16-year-old student at Rottaler Anzeiger . After graduating from high school, she studied French for a year at the Sorbonne in Paris . She then went to the German School of Journalism (DJS) in Munich for two years , worked as a freelancer for Südwestfunk and Bayerischer Rundfunk (BR) and studied French and Spanish at the Ludwig Maximilians University in Munich . From 1978 she became a permanent editor at Zündfunk , the BR's youth radio. In 1985 she became deputy director of the DJS, but continued to work as a freelance editor and presenter for the BR news program Welt am Morgen .

In 1994 she was given the management and management of the DJS. This made her the first woman in Germany to head a journalism school. During this time she co-founded the umbrella association of European journalism schools (EJTA) and the European Journalism Center (EJC) in Maastricht , of which she has been a member since 1999.

Since March 2002, Riederer has been editor-in-chief of radio at BR and head of the Politics and Current Affairs department (today's name: program area B5 current - politics and economy). She retired at the end of March 2017.

In 2011 Mercedes Riederer was a member of the jury for the Axel Springer Prize for young journalists . She was also represented on the radio jury for the journalists' award for civic engagement of the Robert Bosch Stiftung . For ten years she was an honorary member of the board of the PressClub Munich .
